Senior partner, Russell Conway speaks about the 100% preventable death of Awaab Ishak.
The two-year-old died of a respiratory condition caused by exposure to the mould in his flat.
The matter was brought up by Awaab’s father several times with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH), but no action was ever taken. In 2017, Mr. Abdullah— Awaab’s father—told the court that he had seen mould growing in the house and had informed RBH of it. He explained that he was instructed to paint the over the mould . Mr. Abdullah covered the mould with paint, and he did so more than once.
Although this is a terrible, painful situation, the kinds of failings we witnessed here, unfortunately take place frequently and they cause residents great distress.
There has been almost a dismissive attitude, a kind of fatalism among certain landlords, and they haven’t always prioritised or concentrated on problems like “damp and mould.”
